Last week, I presented to a group of elementary principals from across the state of Massachusetts. My session was titled, “The Write Stuff Cafe: Prioritizing Writing Instruction.” In my presentation, I sprinkle in quotes. Some from famous authors and some from future famous authors…children.
When thinking about my favorite things so far with my internship, I immediately thought of the Stephen King quote that I included in my presentation:
“If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.”
Currently, for my internship I am doing a lot of the first thing…reading a lot! And since reading is one of my favorite things, it’s a win-win situation. Reading other people’s writing is automatically helping my own writing. I study someone’s sentence structure. I think about the dialogue they chose to include or not include. I wonder why they decided to start their essay in that way. I am intrigued by the different structures the writers trying to get published worked with, how they strategically placed their words on the page.
I am not sure if I will be asked to do anything else for Forge Magazine, but for now, following Stephen King’s advice, I am reading a lot which will in turn help me to write a lot.
